Physicians and Families Run Together for Special Cause

“Run with the Docs” raised more than $77,000 for Virtua’s perinatal bereavement program

Some of the region’s most well-loved OB/GYN and Maternal Fetal Medicine physicians, donors, and sponsors raised more than $45,000 for Virtua’s comprehensive perinatal bereavement program during the 2nd Annual “Run with the Docs” 5k and 1-Mile Fun Walk at Virtua Voorhees on Sunday, June 5, 2016. The physicians ran alongside more than 450 patients and community members who came out to support this special cause.

The first of its kind, this race was organized in 2015 by a committee of physicians who recognize a need for additional support for patients and families who experience the loss of a pregnancy or an infant. In its first year, Run with the Docs raised $32,000.

“This type of loss can devastate families. As caregivers, we need to know the best ways to provide the comfort and support they need to heal. That’s part of what Virtua’s bereavement program can do with our help,” said Stacy McCrosson, MD, Cherry Hill OB/GYN.

The proceeds will help Virtua expand its bereavement services so they have greater impact and reach more families across the region. With gifts made to Virtua Foundation, Virtua now facilitates education and sensitivity training for healthcare teams in New Jersey and Pennsylvania that may have contact with a family who experiences loss. Bereavement support and counseling is available for grieving parents who are patients at Virtua and at other hospitals in our community.

“The community’s outpouring of support has been tremendous,” said Ann Coyle, RN, manager of the perinatal bereavement program. “It’s so important that grieving patients and families get the right kind of support at the right time and this funding enables us to educate caregivers across the region about how to provide that.”
