Healing through Helping Others

Jogging for Guilia 5k Raises $10,000 for Angel Garden at Virtua Voorhees

Lisa Hindley went to Virtua Voorhees for a routine prenatal checkup at 32-weeks pregnant and the unimaginable happened. Her baby girl Guilia had passed.

The devastation hit hard. This was not news Lisa, her husband Dan and their family expected to receive. Facing this new reality seemed nearly impossible. On February 15, 2014, Lisa gave birth to her stillborn daughter and the Hindleys began the long, difficult process of grieving and healing.

Throughout the tragedy, Lisa and Dan found comfort at Virtua. Their doctors and nurses were compassionate. Employees they didn’t know were thoughtful. The HOPING Group and grief counseling connected them with a family that experienced the same type of unexpected loss.

They also found solace in the Angel Garden at Virtua Voorhees, a peaceful outdoor sanctuary for parents to memorialize and honor babies they have lost a baby. A stone water wall on the perimeter of the garden is adorned with plaques etched with babies’ names.

In the year since they said goodbye to Guilia, the Hindley’s have turned their grief into an opportunity to help other families. The inaugural Jogging for Guilia 5k and 1-Mile Fun Walk, held May 2, 2015, raised more than $10,000.

Lisa and Dan directed the donations to Virtua Foundation in support of the Angel Garden at Virtua Voorhees. Gifts to the Angel Garden help expand and maintain the outdoor space and purchase plaques for children of families in need.

"After we experienced our loss and we saw how important the support of others can be, we knew we needed to do something," said Lisa. "The Angel Garden provides a calming, comfortable, beautiful place to reflect and remember their child. It’s a sanctuary."

The Angel Garden is open to all families who experience the loss of an infant or pregnancy, not just Virtua patients. The Hindelys’ gift reaches far into the community, helping Virtua meet the needs of many families who find comfort here.

Lisa and Dan will continue their fundraising efforts and plans for the 2nd annual race in 2016 are already underway.
