Mobile Dental Unit to Treat Patients
with Disabilities in South Jersey

A grant from Delta Dental of New Jersey aids Virtua in expanding the access to care

People with some physical and developmental disabilities often cannot undergo routine dental exams or extensive treatment in a traditional office setting. Instead, they must be sedated to receive care.

Most practices that perform those services do not accept Medicaid, rendering a significant portion of the community ineligible to receive essential dental checkups, screenings and procedures.

To help improve access for these patients, Delta Dental Foundation of New Jersey recently awarded a $40,000 grant to the

Evans-Wisniewski Dental Center at Virtua Camden to purchase a mobile dental unit. It will allow the team to provide care to disabled adults and children in Camden and surrounding communities.

“It is going to be a great asset to this community,” said Dr. Frank Lammerding, dental director. “It will give access to dental care to a lot of patients who haven’t had that opportunity before.”

The mobile dental unit can move to various locations across South Jersey, including long term care facilities and ambulatory centers where patients can receive anesthesia. It includes all of the tools needed for complete dental care, including an x-ray machine.

Dr. Lammerding and his team have partnered with other organizations that serve the disabled community to identify people in need of care and will provide services in 2014.

The Evans-Wisniewski Dental Center at Virtua Camden offers primary dental care for adults and children. Patients have access to a full range of affordable dentistry services through this fully-accredited general practice post graduate dental residency program.
