Driven to Care for Kids

Driven to care for kids, this Virtua Foundation community partner makes a big impact on the wellbeing of children and families in South Jersey

Thanks to a $35,000 gift from the Carz N’ Toyz organization,  the lobby of the Marvin Samson Foundation Pediatrics and Pediatric Intensive Care Units at Virtua Voorhees was transformed into a special Family Lounge. This space gives patients a chance to forget about the stress of being in the hospital for a bit and experience a more normal environment where they can spend time with their parents and siblings. Computer stations, comfortable furniture, toys, books, and a giant Teddy Bear make the refurbished space warm and functional. Families can utilize the space to share meals together or visit with guests away from the bedside.

Virtua Foundation community partner Carz n’ Toyz is a dedicated community partner and has raised $55,000 to support child life programs at Virtua. The organization came through big for kids served by Virtua over the holiday season, delivering more than 1,200 toys during the annual Toy Run to Virtua Voorhees on December 13, 2014.

“Carz N’ Toyz has been a tremendous partner and friend to Virtua Foundation since this toy drive began in 2011. Their dedication and generosity have changed the lives of many children and families who come to Virtua for care,” said Rose McManus Coleman, Senior Vice President, Virtua Foundation. “Now, with their help, the Pediatric Play Zone will give families a warmer, more child-friendly welcome and ease some of the fear and anxiety our young patients naturally have during a hospital experience.”

Each December since 2011, with a large group of volunteers on hand, Carz N’ Toyz delivers thousands of special items for children to Virtua Voorhees. The toys, books, and even coats for kids in need, are distributed across Virtua hospitals and outpatient facilities that serve children during the holidays and throughout the year.

Carz N’ Toyz support of our child life program helps provide comfort to hospitalized kids or those experiencing the illness of a loved one. This often aids in the healing process and brings extra joy to kids when they need it most.

“Our organization not only puts a smile on the children’s faces, but also the parents’ faces,” said Carz N’ Toyz president Sam Lacroce. “As you know, when you make children happy, you make parents happy.”

History

In 1971, Saverio Lacroce’s son, Saverio Joseph Lacroce, was diagnosed with leukemia and taken to a children’s hospital for treatment. The day the family arrived for admission, someone stole the boy’s overnight bag from the car. The bag was filled with toys and personal items that were meant to make him feel comfortable and surrounded by things special to him while undergoing care.

In 2011, Saverio Lacroce, an avid car enthusiast, helped found Carz n’ Toyz, with Bob Paglione, Ray Giannantonio and Dominic D’Auria. A nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing happiness to sick children, the organization raises money throughout the year at community events to benefit kids served by Virtua.

Today, all Carz n’ Toyz activities, are done in memory of Saverio Joseph Lacroce.

Carz n’ Toyz is dedicated to making the hospital a little less scary for kids. They have donated thousands of toys and games, hundreds of books and many infant car seats to benefit families served by Virtua. Since 2011, they have supported families at Virtua in many ways:

  • The organization donates car seats to families in need so they have safe and proper equipment to take their babies home from the hospital.
  • In 2012 the organization made a $10,000 gift used to purchase evidence-based kid-friendly artwork for the Pediatric Pavilion at Virtua Memorial.
  • In 2013, Carz N’ Toyz also made a $10,000 donation to Virtua Foundation in support of the Virtua Sports Medicine and the Concussion Management Program. The funds will support concussion baseline ImPACT testing for local youth athletic programs. Baseline testing helps clinicians evaluate an athlete’s recovery following a concussion.
