History

Originally named the Women’s Board of West Jersey Hospital, the organization was founded in 1954 with headquarters at the former hospital located on Atlantic and Mount Ephraim Avenues in Camden, NJ, known today as Virtua Health’s Camden campus.

The purpose of the board was to help organize the outreach and fundraising activities of the community auxiliaries, who supported the West Jersey Health System. As the health system grew, auxiliary membership expanded with it to include additional neighboring communities. In 2000, the board changed its name to the Auxiliary Board to Virtua West Jersey Health System to reflect the hospital’s affiliation with the newly created Virtua Health System.

Formerly comprised of six separate auxiliary groups, today, the auxiliary board works as one entity and continues to seek charitable funds for Virtua Health’s hospitals and health centers located in Berlin, Camden, Marlton, and Voorhees.

Philanthropic Impact

Throughout its history, the Auxiliary to Virtua West Jersey has made significant philanthropic contributions that have greatly enhanced programs and services for local patients, families, and community members. In recent years, they have generously given to the Camden CASTLE program in Camden and Berlin serving children with behavioral health needs, as well as to the patient care fund at Virtua Health’s Voorhees and Marlton campuses. Most recently, they have provided support to Virtua Health’s Coronavirus Emergency Response fund to help the Food Access program meet the growing needs of local families in need of fresh, healthy food.
